A fantastic book on the creation of art by one of the greatest music producers of all time。 Nota how-to book, but Rubin's observations on the creative process。 Extraordinary。 A fantastic book on the creation of art by one of the greatest music producers of all time。 Nota how-to book, but Rubin's observations on the creative process。 Extraordinary。 。。。more

The format this book was written in was a little difficult for me to follow at first but I felt as got further in that this added to the books appeal。 He's written this book in a bunch of vignettes that tie together in a very organic way。 I found myself reading the same line over and over again just so I could absorb it into my brain better because I didn't want to miss out on a single good idea。 I sat with a few ideas that hit me really hard for a while。This book challenged my perspective on a The format this book was written in was a little difficult for me to follow at first but I felt as got further in that this added to the books appeal。 He's written this book in a bunch of vignettes that tie together in a very organic way。 I found myself reading the same line over and over again just so I could absorb it into my brain better because I didn't want to miss out on a single good idea。 I sat with a few ideas that hit me really hard for a while。This book challenged my perspective on a few things without having an agenda without telling me what to think and I think that's what made the book good。 。。。more

Undoubtedly the best book I've ever read on the creative process。 Works best if you imagine the whole thing in Rick Rubin's voice。 Some of my favorite lines: https://twitter。com/maxnuss/status/16。。。 Undoubtedly the best book I've ever read on the creative process。 Works best if you imagine the whole thing in Rick Rubin's voice。 Some of my favorite lines: https://twitter。com/maxnuss/status/16。。。 。。。more

As someone who isn't your traditional artist, as the book presents the artist I see now that living is an art itself。 I truly loved this book, it's amazing。 As someone who isn't your traditional artist, as the book presents the artist I see now that living is an art itself。 I truly loved this book, it's amazing。 。。。more

Short, beautiful and insightful anecdotes on the creative act。 Great book。 Every creative should read this。

Rick Ruben is a saint in music。 I would say he could be best described as a midwife for some of the greatest musical works of the 20th and 21st century。 Here, he does it once again by creating a work of art himself。 With this one work of art, he will become a midwife to many more masterpieces, and it will transcend his life。 I know for me, during the course of reading this, I realized how I could end two stories I’ve been working on for years。 Maybe, they too will become a seed for great stories Rick Ruben is a saint in music。 I would say he could be best described as a midwife for some of the greatest musical works of the 20th and 21st century。 Here, he does it once again by creating a work of art himself。 With this one work of art, he will become a midwife to many more masterpieces, and it will transcend his life。 I know for me, during the course of reading this, I realized how I could end two stories I’ve been working on for years。 Maybe, they too will become a seed for great stories。 That would be an honor, as I am certain Rick feels about the role he has played in the making of great works through the ages。 。。。more

A really good read on the essence gif the creative process。 For someone with as much musical experience as the author, the book didn’t overload with rockstar stories。 It kept to teaching creativity。

The first book on being creative I've ever read that quoted one of the Four HorsemenNot pestilence, or war。 The Enforcer。Arn Anderson。 The first book on being creative I've ever read that quoted one of the Four HorsemenNot pestilence, or war。 The Enforcer。Arn Anderson。 。。。more

This book is now a reference book in my home。 It will be the book that can be picked up and opened to whatever chapter it opens to。 That page will be the days words of wisdom。 The book is very readable as each chapter/prompt is covered in a couple of pages。 The chapters offer koan like couplets that convey the information in a non-traditional way。 This is a YES book, meaning the insights are more situated in the "do or don't do" realm。 The subjects provide avenues on now to avoid over intellectu This book is now a reference book in my home。 It will be the book that can be picked up and opened to whatever chapter it opens to。 That page will be the days words of wisdom。 The book is very readable as each chapter/prompt is covered in a couple of pages。 The chapters offer koan like couplets that convey the information in a non-traditional way。 This is a YES book, meaning the insights are more situated in the "do or don't do" realm。 The subjects provide avenues on now to avoid over intellectualizing artistic activities。 Instead Rubin guides readers to the empty artistic spaces available that then lead to available creative pathways。 If that doesn't make sense just go get the book and read it! You won't be disappointed whoever you are。 。。。more

This book rewards those that approach it with a student’s mentality。 Some portions will resonate with a deep truth one already appreciates, others will enlighten new concepts, and others will pass right through without impact。 But on the whole, this can feel like a rich experience。It is on the reader to access its richness。 You should not race through it, you should close the book for the night when you come across a passage that will occupy your mind if you let it, and you should stop reading w This book rewards those that approach it with a student’s mentality。 Some portions will resonate with a deep truth one already appreciates, others will enlighten new concepts, and others will pass right through without impact。 But on the whole, this can feel like a rich experience。It is on the reader to access its richness。 You should not race through it, you should close the book for the night when you come across a passage that will occupy your mind if you let it, and you should stop reading when losing interest; there are no plot twists to suck you back in。 Your cynical side will have a field day if you let it, so it is on you to suppress that perspective。 There is wisdom in what is often stated simply。 A rewarding read that I think I will come back to many times in my life。 。。。more

Really interesting perspective from a man with a hell of a history。

2。5 Stars (is a stretch)。This book was a test。 Another review I saw described the book as being 'filled with ersatz proverbs' and that couldn't have been truer - occasionally the words would connect with me but this never escaped being a book of faux spiritualism and weakly directed advice。 The concept of 'seeds' was quite pleasant and some good affirmations if you're feeling lost in the expression of your creative self。I think Rick Rubin is unequivocally a great artist and a perfect force multi 2。5 Stars (is a stretch)。This book was a test。 Another review I saw described the book as being 'filled with ersatz proverbs' and that couldn't have been truer - occasionally the words would connect with me but this never escaped being a book of faux spiritualism and weakly directed advice。 The concept of 'seeds' was quite pleasant and some good affirmations if you're feeling lost in the expression of your creative self。I think Rick Rubin is unequivocally a great artist and a perfect force multiplier for great artists but this did not translate well to the kind of book by Rick Rubin that I was hoping for。 。。。more

Incredible insight on the journey of an artist。 Rick Rubin’s timeless wisdom and open & honest description of the artistic process through his eyes is one you don’t want to miss。 I listened on audiobook the first time around and I’m already ready to go back and read it so I can highlight some of the many nuggets he so willingly shares。

doesn’t really encourage hard work but more let the work come to you I didn’t like how the book had 2 page chapters and didn’t really feel motivating enough to continue reading。 Cool book to read when you got nothing else。

I grabbed this book as many people I know are rating it。 However if you are looking for something a little deeper and more instructive, this isn't it。This is a collection of long hand memes, essentially lifted from various "how to live well" philosophies。 Now I can see why so many people are enjoying it。 It's easy to connect with, it feels like *oh yeah, of course* , yet as I say, so too would reading Marcus Aurelius Meditations。 Mr Rubin has had an amazing career and with time and hindsight, of I grabbed this book as many people I know are rating it。 However if you are looking for something a little deeper and more instructive, this isn't it。This is a collection of long hand memes, essentially lifted from various "how to live well" philosophies。 Now I can see why so many people are enjoying it。 It's easy to connect with, it feels like *oh yeah, of course* , yet as I say, so too would reading Marcus Aurelius Meditations。 Mr Rubin has had an amazing career and with time and hindsight, of course these things make sense。 This book isn't a cure to your creative block。 It won't write you a bestseller。 But if you connect with what is being said, you may just shift your own mental state and that is where the light gets in。 。。。more

Best book on art & life since “Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking”

Ben Landrum

I’ve always liked Rick Rubin as a kind of guy, existing in this pretty unique niche of producer/guru/almost-billionaire beatnik, and this book is almost exactly what I would’ve expected from him。 That being said, as someone who doesn’t do any kind of art full time there’s not much to take away from it, and it becomes less charming than hearing him wax poetic in an interview。 Recommend if you’re artistically engaged, otherwise rather whimsical for nonfiction。

Alejandro Mesa Rosas

I don’t consider myself as an artist, however this book is inspiring for anyone who wants to be more creative, to anyone who wants to take a peek on the creative process。 I recommend it and should be a must read for any creative person out there。

Michael Wray

As a non-creative, this book is thought provoking。 Chapters are broken up in deep, insightful chuck that are easy to process and ponder。 A great guide to introspection in many facets of life

Jenn

Maybe this would be good for a very young person who is just discovering their creativity, but there wasn’t anything inspirational in there for someone who has been living it for a long time。 Also, there’s no craft to the writing。 The least creative book on creativity I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a lot of them。)
